How the Spanish vocabulary size test works

This URL is the live Spanish vocabulary size test. You first see a bank of lemmas across frequency bands: everyday core words, mid-frequency items, and rarer words that separate stronger readers. For each word you mark whether you know it. On selected items we ask for a short meaning check so “I know it” is not only a gut feeling.

Spanish uses the same 48-lemma design (42 real + 6 foils) with a short Spanish-background survey afterward so learners and heritage speakers can contextualize the band.

After the lemmas you answer a short background survey (how you learned the language, exposure, confidence). Foils and honesty checks

Mixed into the bank are foil forms that look plausible but are not real dictionary lemmas. If you claim many foils as known, the scoring model treats your “known” rate as less trustworthy and adjusts the estimate downward. That is deliberate: unchecked overclaiming makes vocabulary quizzes look higher than reading skill supports.

Answer calmly. Mark “know” only when you could explain or translate the word in your own words. Skipping or saying “don’t know” on hard rare items is normal and usually more accurate than guessing. Meaning checks exist to catch vague familiarity: recognizing a shape on the page is not the same as owning the sense.

How to read your vocabulary estimate

The result is a statistical size estimate with a band, not a census of every word you have ever seen. Online vocabulary tests sample the lexicon; they cannot list tens of thousands of lemmas one by one. Treat the number as a calibrated snapshot for learning goals, content difficulty, or comparison with our related guides.

If the foil adjustment fired, reread rare items more carefully next time. If you are a learner, pair this test with spaced reading rather than chasing a single peak score. Native speakers still see variance from domain vocabulary (technical, literary, regional). A higher band suggests broader recognition; it does not automatically mean fluent production in speech or writing.
