They should be read with caution. Tesla insisted he could run a machine in his head for weeks and then examine it for signs of wear, which as stated is not something a human mind can do; imagination does not simulate metal fatigue. What is plausible, and what engineers who work in three dimensions often report, is an unusually stable and manipulable mental model of a mechanism, good enough to catch design faults before anything is built. He described flashes of light and intrusive images that interfered with his perception of the real world, and he associated them with distress rather than pride. Tesla&#39;s greatest successes came when his physical intuition ran ahead of the mathematics and turned out to be right.
