This article explains the gap between them, what IQ genuinely captures, and everything it leaves out.","en","\u003Ch2 id=\"a-measurement-is-not-the-thing-it-measures\">A measurement is not the thing it measures\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\u003Cp>There is a sentence that quietly causes most of the confusion in this entire field: &quot;his IQ is 130.&quot;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>Read literally, it makes about as much sense as saying &quot;her height is a tape measure.&quot; IQ is not a property of a person. It is a score produced by a specific test, taken on a specific day, under specific conditions, interpreted against a specific reference population. Intelligence is the underlying capacity that the test is attempting — imperfectly, indirectly, but not uselessly — to estimate.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>The distance between those two things is where almost every popular misunderstanding lives. People treat the score as if it were a reading from a thermometer inserted directly into the mind. It is closer to a photograph taken from one angle in one type of light: genuinely informative, genuinely limited, and easy to over-read.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>This article is about that gap. Not to debunk IQ — the evidence behind it is much stronger than its critics usually admit — but to be precise about what it is, what it estimates, and what it structurally cannot see.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Chr>\n\u003Ch2 id=\"where-the-number-comes-from\">Where the number comes from\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\u003Cp>The modern IQ score has a specific history that explains a lot about its shape.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>In 1904 the French government asked Alfred Binet to find a way to identify children who needed additional support in school. Binet built a set of graded tasks — following instructions, naming objects, defining words, reasoning about simple situations — and worked out the average age at which children could pass each one. A child&#39;s &quot;mental age&quot; was the level they could reach; comparing it to their actual age gave a rough index of whether they were ahead or behind.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>Binet was explicit that this was a practical screening tool, not a measure of fixed innate worth. He warned directly against treating it as a permanent verdict. That warning was ignored almost immediately.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>The ratio of mental age to chronological age, multiplied by a hundred, gave the original &quot;intelligence quotient&quot; — which is where the word quotient comes from, and which is also why the term is now technically obsolete. Modern tests do not compute a quotient at all. They compare your raw performance against the distribution of scores in a normed sample of people your age and express the result on a scale with a mean of 100 and a standard deviation of 15. Your IQ is a statement about your position relative to other people, not a quantity of anything.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>That has an immediate consequence people often miss. An IQ of 100 does not mean you have a hundred units of thinking. It means you performed at the median. If the entire population got better at the tasks tomorrow and you stayed the same, your IQ would drop — which is exactly what happens when tests are re-normed after the Flynn effect pushes raw scores upward across a generation.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Chr>\n\u003Ch2 id=\"what-the-test-genuinely-captures\">What the test genuinely captures\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\u003Cp>None of this means IQ is arbitrary. The reason psychometricians take it seriously is a robust empirical regularity known as the positive manifold: across virtually any set of cognitive tasks you can devise, performance correlates positively. Someone who does well on vocabulary tends to do well on matrix reasoning, digit span, mental rotation and arithmetic — tasks that on the surface have almost nothing in common.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>The statistical factor underlying this pattern is called \u003Cstrong>g\u003C\u002Fstrong>, general intelligence. It is not a substance and nobody has found it in the brain as a discrete structure. It is a description of covariance: a compact way of saying that cognitive abilities travel together. Whatever g is, a well-constructed IQ test estimates it reasonably well, and estimates of g turn out to predict a lot.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>They predict school performance, the complexity of the occupation a person ends up in, performance within complex occupations, income, and even health behaviours and longevity. Test-retest reliability in adults is high — typically above 0.9 over short intervals, and individual rank order is fairly stable across decades. By the standards of psychology, these are strong results. Anyone who tells you IQ measures nothing is arguing against a large and unusually consistent body of evidence.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>\n    \u003Cdiv class=\"article-stat\">\n      \u003Cdiv class=\"article-stat__number\">0.9+\u003C\u002Fdiv>\n      \u003Cdiv class=\"article-stat__label\">Test-retest reliability of a professionally administered adult IQ test. As a measurement instrument, it is one of the most consistent tools psychology has produced.\u003C\u002Fdiv>\n    \u003C\u002Fdiv>\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Chr>\n\u003Ch2 id=\"what-the-number-cannot-see\">What the number cannot see\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\u003Cp>And yet. A person walking around in the world uses a great many capacities that a two-hour seated test cannot touch, and it is worth being concrete about them rather than gesturing vaguely at &quot;other kinds of intelligence.&quot;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>Creativity and divergent thinking.\u003C\u002Fstrong> IQ tests are convergent: each item has one correct answer, and you are rewarded for finding it quickly. Creative work is divergent — generating many possible answers, tolerating ambiguity, recognising which unusual idea is worth pursuing. The two are correlated up to a point, then decouple. Above roughly 120, the relationship between measured intelligence and creative achievement becomes weak. Plenty of very high scorers produce nothing original; plenty of moderately scoring people produce work that changes their field.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>Domain expertise.\u003C\u002Fstrong> A grandmaster reconstructing a chess position, a radiologist spotting a tumour in a fraction of a second, a mechanic diagnosing an engine by sound — these are extraordinary cognitive feats, and they are almost invisible to IQ testing because they depend on thousands of hours of stored, structured pattern knowledge rather than on-the-fly reasoning. This is why an experienced professional with an average score routinely outperforms a brilliant novice.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>Practical and tacit knowledge.\u003C\u002Fstrong> Robert Sternberg spent a career documenting the gap between analytical intelligence and the practical judgement that actually gets things done — knowing which rule to bend, who to ask, when a plan is not going to survive contact with reality. It is real, it is learnable, it correlates only weakly with test scores, and it is very hard to measure because it is context-specific by nature.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>Rationality.\u003C\u002Fstrong> Keith Stanovich&#39;s research makes an uncomfortable point: intelligence and rationality are separable. Smart people fall for sunk-cost reasoning, confirmation bias, myside thinking and overconfidence at rates not much lower than everyone else, and in some cases they are worse — because greater cognitive ability makes them better at constructing sophisticated justifications for conclusions they already wanted. High IQ predicts the ability to reason well. It does not predict the disposition to.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>Motivation, persistence and self-regulation.\u003C\u002Fstrong> The single most reliable finding in the literature on long-run achievement is that ability without conscientiousness underperforms. Turning up, finishing, tolerating tedium, delaying gratification — none of these appear on an IQ test, and all of them shape outcomes at least as much as reasoning speed.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>Emotional and social ability.\u003C\u002Fstrong> Reading a room, managing conflict, calibrating what to say to whom. A test administered in silence to one person cannot assess it, and much of adult life consists of it.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Chr>\n\u003Ch2 id=\"the-multiple-intelligences-question\">The multiple intelligences question\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\u003Cp>Howard Gardner&#39;s theory of multiple intelligences — linguistic, logical-mathematical, spatial, musical, bodily-kinaesthetic, interpersonal, intrapersonal, naturalistic — has been enormously popular in education for forty years, largely because it says something people want to hear: everyone is smart in their own way.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>The honest assessment is mixed. As a critique of narrow testing culture and as a piece of educational philosophy, it did valuable work. As a scientific theory, it has not held up well. Gardner proposed the domains as independent, but where they can be measured they correlate positively, which is the opposite of independence and is exactly what the g literature predicts. Several of the proposed intelligences look more like talents or personality dispositions than distinct cognitive systems.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>The reasonable middle position: human ability genuinely is multidimensional, and a single number flattens real and important variation. But the dimensions are correlated rather than separate, and calling every human capacity an &quot;intelligence&quot; makes the word mean so much that it stops meaning anything.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Chr>\n\u003Ch2 id=\"why-two-people-with-the-same-score-are-not-the-same\">Why two people with the same score are not the same\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\u003Cp>This is the point that matters most in practice and gets discussed least.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>An IQ of 120 can be assembled in radically different ways. One person reaches it with exceptional verbal comprehension and merely average processing speed — they write beautifully, argue precisely, and are slow under time pressure. Another reaches the identical composite with outstanding spatial and quantitative reasoning and unremarkable verbal ability — they see structure instantly and struggle to explain it. A third gets there through an unusually large working memory that lets them hold complicated problems in mind while everyone else takes notes.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>These three people have the same number and genuinely different minds. They will succeed in different fields, fail in different ways, and need different working conditions. The composite score is an average that erases exactly the information that would be most useful to them.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>This is why any serious assessment reports a profile — index scores across verbal, perceptual, working memory and processing speed domains — and why a large gap between indices is often more informative than the overall figure. It is also why a single number from a free online quiz is close to useless as self-knowledge, even when it happens to be roughly accurate.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>\n    \u003Cdiv class=\"article-callout\">\n      \u003Cdiv class=\"article-callout__title\">\n        \u003Cspan class=\"article-callout__icon\">💡\u003C\u002Fspan>\n        Read the shape, not the summary\n      \u003C\u002Fdiv>\n      \u003Cdiv class=\"article-callout__body\">If you take a cognitive test, the most valuable output is the pattern across subtests: where you are strong, where you are weak, and how large the spread is. The composite tells you where you sit in a queue. The profile tells you how your mind actually works.\u003C\u002Fdiv>\n    \u003C\u002Fdiv>\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Chr>\n\u003Ch2 id=\"is-intelligence-fixed\">Is intelligence fixed?\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\u003Cp>The nature-versus-nurture framing has aged badly, because the answer turned out to be &quot;both, interactively, and the balance shifts with age.&quot;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>Twin and adoption studies converge on a heritability estimate for adult intelligence somewhere around 0.5 to 0.8 — meaning that a substantial share of the \u003Cem>variation between people in a given population\u003C\u002Fem> is associated with genetic variation. Two caveats immediately matter. Heritability is a population statistic and says nothing about any individual. And it is not constant: heritability of intelligence is low in early childhood and rises through adolescence into adulthood, partly because people increasingly select environments that match their dispositions.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>Environment does real work, especially at the lower end. Malnutrition, lead exposure, chronic stress, poverty and educational deprivation all measurably suppress cognitive development, and removing them produces real gains. An additional year of schooling is associated with a gain of one to five IQ points in well-controlled studies. The Flynn effect — population scores rising roughly three points per decade through most of the twentieth century — is proof that environmental conditions move the whole distribution.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>What does not work, despite an entire industry built on the claim, is brain training as a route to general intelligence. The consistent finding across meta-analyses is that you improve at the trained task, improve somewhat at very similar tasks, and do not improve at unrelated ones. Fluid ability itself barely budges.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>What does help is less exciting and better evidenced: consistent sleep, aerobic exercise, treating anxiety and depression, reducing alcohol, and continuous engagement with genuinely difficult material. None of these raise your ceiling. Several of them remove the things dragging you below it, which for most people is the larger opportunity.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Chr>\n\u003Ch2 id=\"so-what-is-iq-good-for\">So what is IQ good for?\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\u003Cp>Used properly, an IQ score is a useful instrument with a defined job.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>It is good at flagging when something is unusual — identifying children who need additional support or additional challenge, detecting cognitive decline against a person&#39;s own earlier baseline, contributing to a clinical picture alongside other assessments. It is reasonably good at predicting group-level outcomes: give a thousand people a test and you can say meaningful things about how the group will distribute across occupations and educational attainment.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>It is much weaker as a verdict on an individual. It cannot tell you whether a specific person will succeed, what they will contribute, whether they will be worth working with, or what they will care about. The number is a decent estimate of one important slice of the capacity — the ability to reason abstractly, learn quickly and manipulate complexity — and it earns its place in psychology by predicting outcomes better than most alternatives.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>But the mind that number came from also creates, persists, empathises, judges, imagines, specialises, and occasionally does something no test could have anticipated. Treating the estimate as the whole thing is the single most common error in this field, and it is made just as often by people who worship the score as by people who dismiss it.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>Know your number if you are curious. Read the profile behind it if you want something useful. And remember that the most consequential things you will do with your mind are not on the
