Learners are not “broken natives”

If English is not your first language, a vocabulary size estimate on general adult bands will often place you below lifelong natives. That is expected. It is not a moral grade and not proof that you “have no talent for languages.”

Search around this worry sounds different: English vocabulary test, vocabulary size for learners, test your vocabulary, how many English words do I need. Some people want an A2/B1/C1 badge. Some want a lemma count. NeuroLab here is about recognition size, with an end survey that notes you are learning the language rather than growing up inside it.

⚠️ Snapshot, not a brand
A lower score than a native while you study seriously is a normal stage. Compare yourself to yourself across months, not to a stranger’s native screenshot.

Why learners and natives look different on one scale

Frequency bands reflect how common a word is in broad English use. Natives absorb rare bookish and spoken forms “for free” over decades. Learners build a core on purpose, while the long tail of rare lemmas grows slowly until reading volume is large.

So “I’m B2 but my lexicon looks weak next to a native” is not always a paradox. CEFR looks at a skill bundle. A size test looks at lemma recognition. You can speak confidently on a frequent core and still read little rare vocabulary.

How to take the test without self-sabotage

Honest “don’t know” beats flattering guessing. Foils punish random “I know” and protect you from a fairy tale in the high direction.

Do not Google mid-test. Do not translate every half-familiar word out of habit. After the run, move real misses into a reading list - not a shame list.

The end survey (native language, learning history) keeps context. It is not a paywall.

How to connect the score to study

  1. Take 15-30 real missed words from the run (or close neighbors if the list is closed).
  2. Meet each in 2-3 sentences from live text, not only on a translation card.
  3. Retake in weeks under similar conditions. Watch the corridor shift, not overnight magic.

If the goal is an exam, add skills practice (listening, writing). Vocabulary helps reading and sharper speaking, but it does not replace exam format.

The question how many words do I need is better turned into a goal: travel minimum, study, text-heavy work. One “everyone must” number does not exist.

If you are bilingual or learning two languages

Russian vocabulary size is a separate module. Do not add Russian and English counts into “total intelligence,” and do not subtract one from the other as a penalty.

IQ matrices are another axis again: patterns with little language. Useful nearby if you confuse “few words” with “poor reasoning.” Often it is simply a lexicon stage.

Pace tip: twenty minutes of reading three times a week beats a heroic 200-card Sunday and silence until the next test. Size estimates like steady text contact more than one-off marathons.

If you are exam-bound, keep two notebook columns: “words from my texts” and “exam format.” Mixing them is a common reason vocabulary scores rise while a mock IELTS stays flat.

FAQ

Is it normal that my score is lower than natives in videos?
Yes, very often. Compare progress and reading volume, not someone else’s native flex.
Does this replace an English level test?
No. CEFR / placement is about skills. A size test is about how many lemmas you recognize. Use them together, not as substitutes.
Should I study the test’s own words?
As one-off memory - weakly useful. As a strategy - better words from your texts and topics. Otherwise you train a list item, not a life lexicon.
Can I take it with a translator open?
Technically yes, pointless in practice: you measure lookup skill, not recognition. For an honest snapshot, close the dictionary for ten minutes.
Is it free?
Yes: on-screen result without paying for a report.
