Elon Musk's IQ is estimated at 155-160, but is it real? We analyze his SAT scores, cognitive profile, and what neuroscience actually says about his intelligence.

Type "Elon Musk IQ" into Google and you'll get a confident answer: 155. Sometimes 160. Occasionally 158. So where does the number come from? And more importantly: does it matter?

The Only Hard Data: SAT Scores
In 1989, a seventeen-year-old Elon Musk sat for the SAT. He scored 1490 out of 1600 — 670 Verbal, 820 Math. His brother Kimbal scored 1390. Their mother, Maye Musk, has mentioned these scores in interviews.
The SAT is not an IQ test, but it correlates strongly with general intelligence (g). Psychometric studies consistently find correlations between SAT scores and IQ in the range of r = 0.4 to 0.8, depending on the sample and the IQ test used as a criterion.

Several published formulas convert SAT scores to estimated IQ. The most widely cited comes from Frey and Detterman (2004), who found that SAT scores are essentially an IQ test in disguise. Their regression equation maps the old SAT (pre-1995 recentering) onto the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale (WAIS).
Using the Frey-Detterman formula, a 1490 on the 1989 SAT translates to an estimated IQ of approximately 139-145 — well above average, but nowhere near the 155-160 that circulates online.
Other estimation methods tell a similar story:
- Lynn's method (SAT → IQ via national norms): ~140-143
- Rindermann & Thompson (2011): SAT correlates 0.82 with g in nationally representative samples, placing a 1490 scorer in the top 1-2% of the population — roughly IQ 133-145
- SAT-Math subscale alone (820/800 old scale, which was harder than post-1995): suggests strong fluid reasoning, estimated IQ 145+ on math-specific tasks
The math subscale is particularly interesting. An 820 in 1989 — when the math section was notoriously difficult and a perfect 800 was rare — suggests exceptional quantitative reasoning. But Verbal at 670, while strong, is not extraordinary.
Where Did "IQ 155" Come From?
The "155" figure appears to originate from a 2015 blog post that estimated IQs of celebrities based on... other blog posts. The number was then picked up by content farms and amplified across the internet until it became "common knowledge."
No primary source exists. No school record, no Mensa test, no clinical assessment. The number is a citation ghost — a factoid that exists because it has been repeated enough times.
This is not unique to Musk. The same phenomenon occurs with Albert Einstein (often cited as 160, never tested), Stephen Hawking (quoted as 160, also never tested), and Bill Gates (variously 160 or 170, no source). The pattern is always the same: a high number is asserted, repeated, and crystallized into "fact."
IQ vs Achievement: What Science Actually Says
Here is the uncomfortable truth that IQ evangelists tend to skip: above IQ 120, the correlation between IQ and real-world achievement drops sharply. This is one of the most replicated findings in intelligence research.
The classic study is Terman's longitudinal research on gifted children. Terman identified 1,528 children with IQs above 135 and tracked them for decades. Two findings stand out:
- The "Termites" (as they were called) did well — above-average incomes, low unemployment, good health. But they did not produce a disproportionate number of Nobel laureates, CEOs, or world-changers.
- Two children who were rejected from the study because their IQs didn't meet the threshold went on to win Nobel Prizes: William Shockley (transistor) and Luis Alvarez (physics). Both had IQs in the 120s.

Based on the available evidence:

- His success is better explained by the combination of above-average intelligence + extreme conscientiousness + first-principles thinking + risk tolerance + 25 years of domain expertise than by any single IQ number
